New Grant: Roving Scholar for Primary Schools

Unique among Fulbright grant opportunities around the world, the Roving Scholar program is one of the Norwegian Fulbright program’s crown jewels. It affords seasoned educators a chance to spend an entire school year travelling throughout Norway to hold workshops in American Studies for students, their teachers, and higher education students aspiring to become teachers.

Tasked broadly with helping students practice their English by presenting on American history, culture, and society, Roving Scholars (Rovers) lead sessions in English for students on various topics relating to the United States and in accordance with their areas of expertise. Be it history, culture, literature, or current events, Rover sessions give students a chance to practice English with a native speaker and gain content knowledge in the process. Likewise, Rover workshops for teachers and teachers-in-training provide both content and pedagogy advice.

The program began in 1987 with a lone Rover who visited upper secondary schools. Over time it expanded to include a second upper secondary school Rover, a lower secondary school Rover, and a regional Rover in Østfold. In 2023-24 we will pilot a new grant for a Roving Scholar for Primary Schools. The students will be younger and less versed in English, but the aim of this new Rover grant will be the same: to contribute to English language education through guest workshops with US-focused content and/or teaching methods.

Teachers, professors of elementary education, and others with relevant education and experience are encouraged to apply. The application deadline is September 15thClick here for more information and the online application Form.
