Alison Billman is the Early Elementary Curriculum Director and an Academic Researcher at the University of California, Berkeley’s Lawrence Hall of Science. She has extensive experience teaching primary grade students and working with teachers to design motivating, project-based instruction for primary classrooms. Her research focuses on literacy-rich science instruction and the design of science texts that support reading to learn for beginning readers. As curriculum director, she leads the design of developmentally appropriate curriculum for the early grade units of Amplify Science—a curriculum implemented across the US. She serves as program and research advisor to US federally funded projects and several non-profit organizations whose missions focus on early childhood literacy, science, and engineering. Projects have included co-designing and writing the Always ReadingTM curriculum for Kristi Yamaguchi Always Dream, participating on a National Geographic author team, serving as an educational staff leader for the Pennsylvania Friends of Agriculture Foundation Ag in the Classroom teacher development program, and co-designing teacher professional development curriculum for the McKeever Environmental Center.
