Ryan has worked as an elementary teacher for over 18 years and is currently completing his PhD in Elementary Education through the University of Minnesota. As both a practicing upper elementary school teacher and as a pedagogy researcher, Ryan works to engage diverse learners through interdisciplinary, thematic instruction. Combining creativity, play, research, arts and science, thematic instruction allows for language acquisition, content development, and skill practice within dynamic, layered lesson structures. Ryan’s favorite types of thematic instruction allow children to explore local history and ecology, whether it is through creating plays or collaborative writing to explore social studies concepts or developing interpretive materials for public lands and regional parks to give children access to science content.
Having taught across a wide range of schools, in Chicago, IL, the San Francisco Bay Area and in rural Minnesota, Ryan finds joy in forming relationships within school communities and developing curricular resources that address local needs and interests. His PhD research is on supporting new and novice teachers engaging in equity-focused teaching practices.
Outside of schools, Ryan is an avid climber and mountaineer, cross country skier, backpacker and fisherman. He leads youth adventure camps in bikepacking and canoeing.
