Applications will be considered from well-qualified candidates in all fields. Projects can be either full-time study or a combination of independent research and advanced courses or seminars. Fulbright grantees pursuing master’s degrees at public institutions in Norway are exempt from paying tuition.
Students interested in a Fulbright grant to Norway are encouraged to contact the Norwegian institution, program or professor of their choice. It is always of value to us if you can include an evaluation or a comment from a Norwegian professor, indicating whether or not they find your project of interest, and their interest in becoming an adviser during your stay in Norway. This is especially true if your plans include independent research. You cannot, however, expect to get a letter of invitation or a letter of acceptance to a degree program or an institution.
Music and art students should apply formally to the Norwegian institution before the school’s deadline in order to secure “visiting student” status.
The Norwegian Centre for International Cooperation in Higher Education offers information on all Norwegian institutions of higher learning.
The Research Council of Norway has identified a number of Centres of Excellence in various fields. The centres are affiliated with Norway’s top universities and premier independent research institutes. Search for centres with relevance for your particular field in the Research Council’s Project Database.
Eligibility Requirements:
Applicants must be U.S. citizens at the time of the application. U.S. citizens who hold dual citizenship with Norway are not eligible to apply. Residence in Norway in the year prior to the grant is not permitted.
Preference will be given to applicants whose higher education was received primarily at educational institutions in the United States. Foreign study during the junior year or other periods of undergraduate study that are integral parts of the curricula of American institutions will not be considered disqualifying.
Preference will usually be given to candidates who have not resided or studied in Norway for more than six months. Candidates who spent more than six months in Norway on duty abroad in the Armed Forces of the United States will not be at a disadvantage.
Applicants must hold a B.A./B.S. degree or the equivalent before the beginning date of the grant. For more information about eligibility, please see the IIE website.
Important Information:
- Number of grants: Approx. 15
- Language: Knowledge of Norwegian is advantageous but not required, as many subjects are available in English. In addition, most universities offer Norwegian courses for foreign students.
- Academic Year: Generally mid-August through mid-June with the grant period being of same duration.
- Tuition: Tuition at public universities and colleges is free, but grantees usually pay a modest semester fee.
