Nancy Cardona is an Associate Professor of English at Fort Lewis College, a Native American serving teaching institution located
in southwest Colorado. She completed her terminal degree at Indiana University-Bloomington. Her teaching areas include American
literature, African American literature, U. S. Latina/o literature, American popular culture (especially television and film),
media literacy, and representations of the Holocaust. More recently, Nancy has begun to explore fan culture, as she herself
has become a participant in multiple fandoms such as Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead.
Although not part of her formal training, Nancy is a political junkie. She has registered voters, worked as a campaign data entry clerk, helped to ensure voters’ rights as a poll sitter, and served as a polling place captain in the 2012 election. She looks forward to talking with students about the United States’ November 2016 election.
Nancy is also deeply committed to creating an active learning environment for students. She has consciously changed her teaching style in the last seven years, adding learning activities that challenge students to go beyond a traditional reading of a text. She is currently considering changing to competency based assessment for her classes.
